A Brand Pluck’d Out of the Burning

Boston Reverend Cotton Mather’s account of the affliction of Mercy Short reads like a 17th century exorcism. A seventeen-year-old orphan in 1692, Short felt she’d been cursed after an encounter in jail with the accused “witch” Sarah Good. As Mather and other Boston neighbors gathered to pray, fast, and observe Short’s strange and terrifying behavior, the reverend took notes and circulated his narrative among a small circle of friends in 1693. It was not until 1914 that it was widely published.
