Newbury’s First Parish Church, which gathered in 1635, worships today in a church which is over 150 years old, built after 1858.
More About First Parish Church
When Newbury’s town center moved from the Lower Green north toward the Merrimack River in 1646, a new, second meeting house was built on the Upper Green. A third followed in 1661, a fourth stood until 1806, (these buildings were located where the First Parish Burying Ground is today) and a fifth was built on the site of the present-day church. That building burned in 1868, and was replaced by today’s church, now more than 150 years old. (The sign in front of the church lists the multiple meeting house dates as 1646, 1660, 1700, and 1806, and says they were all across the street.)
