At the intersection of Centre and Ingersoll Streets is the Village Training Field. This field is just west of the property owned by the Walcott family in 1692. It was first used for drills and military training in 1671 and was particularly important by 1675 during King Philip’s War. Salem Village was on the frontier and the residents had to be prepared for Native American attack. In 1709, the land was willed by Nathaniel Ingersoll “to the inhabitants of the village for a training place forever.”
