Italian poet, writer, and philosopher Dante Alighieri published the first canticle of his famous poem, Commedia Cantica I: Inferno, circa 1315. In it, a fictionalized version of himself travels through the nine circles of hell, through increasing levels of darkness to where Lucifer himself resides, and ends with a revelatory vision of God. He is guided on his journey by ancient Roman poet Virgil. Parts II (Purgatorio) and III (Paradiso) followed – altogether known as The Divine Comedy. Dante Alighieri’s work is one of the great classics of Western literature.
This beautiful Penguin Classics edition, translated and edited by Robin Kirkpatrick, includes a chronology, a thorough and engrossing introduction, a list of further reading, a map of Italy circa 1300, a Plan of Hell, and detailed commentaries and notes. (hardcover, 2010)
