In the Upano area of Ecuador, a massive, sophisticated urban society is discovered by a team from the National Centre for Scientific Research in France. This discovery of this city and its complex roadways and waterways changes what is known and accepted about the history of people living in the Amazon. This site is the oldest discovered site in the Amazon and further challenges the Eurocentric idea of Amazonian people living in small, nomadic groups rather than complicated, urban societies.
