A gunman kills nineteen students and two teachers and wounds seventeen others at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Earlier in the day, the perpetrator shot his grandmother in the forehead, injuring her gravely, before leading police on a chase ending at the school. The shooter met no resistance as he entered the school and remained inside for over one hour before police intervened. Clashes between civilians and police officers erupted outside of the school as parents and others attempted to rescue children as police delayed entry. The attack has resulted in criticism of law enforcement for their handling of the situation, calls for stronger gun laws, and contempt from those believing the shooting should not be politicized.
