A lone gunman kills five people and injures two others after opening fire at the Capital Gazette newspaper offices in Annapolis, Maryland. Authorities suspect that the attack was motivated by the shooter’s anger concerning the negative, but factual information printed about him by the paper. The perpetrator lost a defamation case to the paper concerning the printing of his criminal record and had sent numerous threatening emails to staff. No actions were taken by authorities despite the threats.
